Advance Auto Parts to Shut Down More Than 700 Locations Amid Declining Sales

Advance Auto Parts is set to close over 700 locations by mid-2025 as it grapples with declining sales. The company plans to reduce its total number of stores from 4,492 by 727. Out of the closures, 523 are corporate-owned, while the remaining 204 are independently owned. A specific list of the closing locations has not yet been released.

In addition to store closures, Advance Auto Parts will also shut down four distribution centers as part of its restructuring efforts.

During the third quarter of 2024, the company reported a decline in comparable store sales by 2.3% compared to the previous year. The decision to close stores is part of a broader three-year strategy aimed at improving operating income.

To enhance efficiency and availability of parts, Advance Auto Parts plans to consolidate its distribution centers, strategically source vendors, and implement effective assortment management.

“We are charting a clear path forward and introducing a new three-year financial plan, with a focus on executing core retail fundamentals to improve the productivity of all our assets and to create shareholder value,” said Shane O’Kelly, president of the company.

Earlier this month, Advance Auto Parts announced the sale of Worldpac, Inc. for $1.5 billion; Worldpac is a wholesale distributor of auto parts. Currently, Advance Auto Parts stands as the fourth-largest chain of auto parts stores in the United States.
