Fortnite Players to Receive Refunds After Being 'Deceived' by In-Game Purchases

Fortnite players are set to receive refunds following allegations from federal regulators that Epic Games misled users into making in-game purchases. The company reached a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) two years ago, and now the commission has announced that it will distribute over 600,000 payments amounting to $72 million to gamers or their parents for those underage.

Refunds will be issued to players who submitted valid claims before October 8 of this year. However, there is still an opportunity for others to file a claim; players have until January 10 to do so on the FTC's website.

Those who submitted claims prior to the October deadline can expect their payments via check or PayPal, based on their selected preference. The FTC highlighted that "counterintuitive, inconsistent and confusing button configuration" contributed to unwanted purchases.

The agency stated, "The company unlawfully charged players for unwanted purchases, let children rack up unauthorized charges without their parents’ permission and blocked some users who disputed wrongful charges from accessing their purchased content."

As part of the settlement with the FTC, Epic Games is now required to obtain explicit consent before charging users and is prohibited from locking players out of their accounts if they contest unauthorized charges.
