Oscar Nominees Announced for the 97th Academy Awards

The nominees for the 97th Academy Awards have been announced, leading the way is Jacques Audiard's "Emilia Pérez," a Spanish language, French-made film, with 13 nominations, including best picture and best actress for Karla Sofía Gascón, making her the first openly trans actor ever nominated for an Oscar.

The nominations had originally been planned for Jan. 17. But after wildfires on Jan. 7 began burning through parts of Los Angeles, leaving behind mass destruction, the academy extended its voting window and twice postponed the nominations announcement.

The nominees for the 97th Academy Awards have been announced, with a range of films and performers vying for top honors."The King's Man" director Matthew Vaughn was thrilled to see his film receive several nominations. In the Best Actor category, Will Smith is up against Timothée Chalamet, Denzel Washington, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Mahershala Ali."I'm truly humbled by this recognition," said Smith in a statement. "I am grateful to have had the opportunity to play this role."The nominees for Best Actress include Olivia Colman, Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Michelle Yeoh, and Jamie Lee Curtis."This is an incredible honor, I'm so grateful to be recognized by the Academy," said Colman.
