Surprise for Indiana Grandma from Star Basketball Player Caitlin Clark
An Indiana grandmother, 77-year-old Mary Johann, woke up on Christmas morning to the surprise of her lifetime - tickets to see Caitlin Clark play in person.
Johann, known as "Maw Jo" by her 11 grandkids, is a self-proclaimed super fan of Clark's. She watched nearly every game of last season from her Evansville living room and had attending a Fever game on her bucket list.
"I'm on my feet," Johann said. "I'm all over the room. I'm here by myself, but I love it. I cheer. I scream. I like her character I like the way she handles the public."
Johann's granddaughter, Taylor Massey, who lives in Indianapolis, wanted to make her grandmother's dream a reality.
Massey recorded Johann opening a boxed gift on Christmas morning, and inside, Johann found a Clark jersey with the famous "22" number. Moments later, Massey prompted Johann to look underneath the tissue paper, revealing tickets to a Fever game.
"I am going to the game!" Johann said as she realized her dream was coming true.
Massey posted the video online, and it quickly went viral, earning likes, views, and comments from fans, including a comment from Clark herself: "Lets go grams."
Johann's reaction was priceless, with tears of joy streaming down her face when she learned that Clark had commented on the video. Massey described Johann's response as "screaming" when she found out.
Johann said that attending a game means more than just watching sports - it's about fulfilling a dream and seeing what was once impossible become possible. She shared her own story of being unable to play sports due to lack of representation, but still finding joy in the game.
"Well it comes from me not being able to play a sport," Johann said. "I couldn’t even wear slacks to school, much less put on a basketball uniform. I was athletic, but had no out for being an athletic person. To see women come this far, it’s amazing to me. It’s just truly amazing."
Johann's determination to make sure her granddaughters have the same opportunities she didn't is inspiring, with Massey describing her as "strong and independent" and instilling confidence in those around her.
"My childhood is her, and she’s one of my very best friends," Massey said. "She’s always been so strong and independent, and she has instilled that in me, and my mom, and my aunts. I would say just being a strong, independent, confident woman and knowing that you can do anything that you set your mind to by yourself and you don’t need anyone else to have to have alongside to get things done."
Johann's advice to young girls with similar dreams is simple: stay independent and always be kind.
