41st Annual Thanksgiving Dinner Giveaway Feeds Approximately 1,000 Residents of Anderson
ANDERSON — Thursday marked a significant day of generosity for local churches in Anderson, as they came together for the Gospel Highlight Broadcast's annual mission to serve the community.
This year, approximately 1,000 Thanksgiving plates were provided to residents, showcasing the spirit of giving that defines this cherished event.
"Busy, busy, busy," said Neva Brooks.
For decades, serving meals to the Anderson community has been an integral part of Brooks' Thanksgiving tradition. She reflected on her experiences:
"I started doing this as a child because my parents were part of the original turkey giveaway, so it really makes me feel good every year to come and give back to the community," said Brooks.
Now in its 41st year, the annual Thanksgiving Day dinner continues to thrive.
James L. Warner stands as the last remaining original member involved in organizing this beloved event. He emphasized its significance:
"It's a day of thanks that the Lord has blessed us with. We got this day and we ought to be thankful, happy, and glad that we have this day," said Warner.
Alongside church members, volunteers from various sectors including Anderson police and even the mayor joined together to cook, serve, and deliver hearty meals featuring turkey, mashed potatoes, corn, yams, and more.
Community members had multiple options for receiving their meals: they could call in requests or visit Anderson St. Zion Baptist Church's drive-through or walk inside to pick up their plates.
"I have a guy who goes to every car and finds out how many dinners they want; then they can come inside and eat," said Warner.
The organizers also ensured that those unable to leave their homes were not forgotten; meals were delivered right to their doors. Winston Lovelace shared his thoughts on serving these individuals:
"They are on walkers and canes. They are alone and on days like today, we really bless them and it just warms my heart when we do that," said Lovelace.
Warner reminded everyone about the importance of fellowship and kindness towards one another:
"Jesus said we must love and should love each other," he said.
