IMPD Revises Traffic Strategy for Upcoming Taylor Swift Concerts

INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis police have announced updates to their traffic plan for the upcoming Taylor Swift concerts at Lucas Oil Stadium, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday nights.

“In an effort to improve traffic flow even more tonight, below is a list of changes that are being made to the outbound traffic pattern.  Again, these are only changes/additions to the outbound traffic pattern that will begin at approx. 11pm tonight:

  1. West St/Washington St – No S/B traffic. S/B – Traffic will be diverted to W/B Washington St.
  2. West St/ Maryland – No S/B or E/B at Maryland – All traffic will be diverted N/B on West St.
  3. Washington/Schumacher Way – White River State Park parking lot will be directed to W/B Washington St.  No S/B traffic onto Schumacher to Maryland St.
  4. SB West St at I-70 W/B – traffic will be forced onto I-70 W/B only.
  5. Madison Ave/McCarty St. – S/B only on Madison Ave.

“Rideshare staging at 10pm is NOT changing. Rideshare/parent pick up locations are the same.

“Two of these changes were made last night during the outbound traffic pattern and were successful.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department on Nov. 2, 2024

Earlier report

Taylor Swift’s fans should expect detours on their routes to and from her concerts at Lucas Oil Stadium. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) recommends planning ahead, considering public transportation or rideshare options to avoid parking congestion.

Special Operations Commander Chuck Deblaso emphasized, “This is an event city. This is huge. Make no mistake about it; there is going to be a lot of people in a small area. It could be upwards of 200,000 people.”

The IMPD has issued an extensive list of road closures alongside a map detailing drop-off sites, rideshare pickup areas, and designated "parent pick-up" lots for Nov. 1-4. The police stated that “with hundreds of thousands of fans expected in Swift City, these closures are intended to ensure the safety of concertgoers and community members.” They also reminded fans that “traffic and road closures may change based on real-time conditions.”

Additionally, some usual downtown parking spots will be closed off; motorists ignoring “no parking” signs risk being towed. Towed vehicles can be retrieved from Auto Return located at 323 S. Post Road, which is east of downtown where the concerts are taking place.

To help ease navigation for fans, many downtown street signs have been playfully renamed with Swift-themed titles.

The sold-out shows mark the final three performances in the United States as part of The Eras Tour and are set to start at 7 PM on Nov. 1-3.
