Lunar Eclipse Over Indianapolis

Lunar Eclipse Over Indianapolis

The skies above Indianapolis are about to put on a spectacular show. While most will remember the rare total solar eclipse that crossed central Indiana in 2024, this month brings a different kind of celestial phenomenon: a total lunar eclipse.

"It's not as rare as a total solar eclipse, but it's still a pretty cool event," said [Name].

The timing of the lunar eclipse is set for early morning hours on Friday, March 14. In Indianapolis, our partial phase begins at 1:09 a.m., with totality lasting from 2:26-3:31 a.m. During this time, the moon will take on a reddish orange hue as Earth casts its shadow on it – earning it the nickname "blood moon." By 4:47 a.m., the partial eclipse will come to a close.

Next lunar eclipses

Lunar eclipses are much more common than their solar counterparts. Before the 2024 total solar eclipse, it had been centuries since Indianapolis witnessed a total solar eclipse. For our next total lunar eclipse, we'll have to wait until March 3, 2026.

A partial lunar eclipse will also be visible in August 2026.
