Monumental Marathon Celebrates Its 17th Edition
INDIANAPOLIS — The CNO Financial Indianapolis Monumental Marathon is set to take place downtown for its 17th edition on Saturday morning.
The race weekend commenced with the Monumental Health and Fitness Expo at the Indiana Convention Center, where athletes collected their race packets, explored the latest wellness products, received marathon preparation tips, and listened to insights from Olympic gold medalists.
“How I train is going to be different from how someone else trains, and then maybe something that works really well for someone can be very beneficial for another,” said Allie Vincent, a participant. “So, just connecting with others and learning from others is really vital for all of us becoming better at our craft.”
For runners like Vincent, who is participating in the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon for the second time, this event serves as a source of inspiration and confidence before the big day. Having completed six marathons since 2020, she emphasizes that preparation is crucial.
“I take a 12-week block, and I just look at it and break it down week by week,” Vincent explained. “I make sure I have a long run in there, some workouts, and some junk miles or time on my feet throughout the rest of the week.”
Runners from all 50 states and over 30 countries—including Bermuda, France, Singapore, and China—will participate in Saturday’s race. Indianapolis native and 2024 Olympic gold medalist Cole Hocker will serve as one of this year’s honorary starters.
“It’s going to be special because it really will be my first time doing it with a crowd, with the fans,” said Blake Sanie, a participant from Chicago. “I can’t wait to feel all of the energy. I’m excited.”
Sanie views training for the marathon as an excellent opportunity to bond with friends.
“A lot of it was just having fun with my friends—ensuring that we get the miles in that we need every week—but also not doing too much,” Sanie shared. “Making sure we can take care of ourselves while also allowing time to recover so we can ease into marathon week."
For first-time marathon participants, Vincent advises being well-prepared by organizing everything needed the night before.
“Focus on just having fun,” Vincent suggested. “Prepare where you’re going for the start line. Know how far away it is; if you’re parking, figure that out tonight.”
There will be road closures ahead of the race; specifically, Washington Street between Capitol Avenue and West Street will be closed. Roads along each marathon course will experience various traffic restrictions.
The marathon begins at 6:30 a.m., concluding around 4 p.m.
