Non-Profit Organizes Thanksgiving Dinner for Homeless Youth in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS — With Thanksgiving just a few weeks away, a local non-profit organization dedicated to supporting homeless youth in Indianapolis held an early celebration to express gratitude and foster community among those they serve.

The Thanksgiving dinner organized by Outreach Indiana provided more than just a warm meal; it offered young people the chance to connect with others facing similar challenges. Brandon Strauss, a 25-year-old father who has benefited from the organization’s support, expressed how meaningful this gathering was to him.

“It’s big. To be able to meet people that are struggling with the same thing or in the same age group as you,”

Outreach Indiana has played a crucial role in helping Strauss find employment, secure baby formula, and arrange transportation for appointments.

Many attendees shared their personal struggles. Kadince McGowan-Tacy reflected on her journey:

“I would not be here and he would not be physically, mentally, or emotionally if it wasn’t for outreach.”

Eba’nesha Bowles, a 23-year-old participant of five years, also highlighted the importance of support during difficult times:

“While I was in high school, I was considered homeless so just being able to have people to support me and helping me take care of my needs is very helpful.”

The evening's event not only provided meals but also critical winter gear for the youth. Outreach’s CEO Andrew Neal emphasized the necessity of such resources:

“For a lot of our youth and young adults, they don’t have winter gear and so from this generous donation from EnVista, we’re able to make sure they’re going to be prepared for this winter.”

Neal noted that homelessness among young people is an increasing concern in Indianapolis, with approximately 8,100 individuals aged 14 to 24 experiencing homelessness.

This growing issue underscores the importance of gatherings like these during holidays. Neal stated:

“While they may not be able to have a Thanksgiving like you and I do at our houses, this is a chance for them to gather together and express gratitude for all the blessings they have.”

Brandon Strauss expressed his appreciation for Outreach Indiana's support:

“They’ve helped out a lot so I’m very thankful for outreach.”

The organization focuses on connecting youth with essential services while enhancing their social, emotional, intellectual, physical, and spiritual well-being. Their three program centers offer vital necessities such as hot meals, showers, laundry facilities, clothing assistance, and much more.
