Bruce Arians Weighs In on Colts' Quarterback Battle
Few people know the Indianapolis Colts like Bruce Arians, who had two stints with the team as quarterbacks coach and interim head coach. So, when Arians weighed in on the quarterback battle between Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones, it was worth listening.
Arians praised Jones, who got his first NFL win against Arians when he was coaching the Buccaneers in 2019. “I thought the kid had it,” Arians said. “He is athletic, he’s smart, accurate. I think he got the hell beat out of him up there in New York, with that offensive line and not having the premiere skill players around him. But I think he’s a great talent.”
Arians was more critical of Richardson, saying, “Anthony I think needed two more years in college as a passer... Not as an athlete. He’s a great athlete. But as a passer, I didn’t see him come out being able to beat anyone in two minute or third down, and that’s where you win in the NFL. If you can’t win third down and two minute, you’re just an average guy.”
Despite his criticisms, Arians believes Richardson has growth potential this upcoming season. He also complimented Richardson on his work ethic.
“I think he’s going to put the work in,” Arians said. “He’s got a great reputation as a hard worker. But Daniel will push him. Daniel’s going to really push him.”
