Colts and Irsay Family Contribute $1 Million to Support Girls' High School Flag Football

INDIANAPOLIS — The Colts and the Jim Irsay family have pledged a significant investment of $1 million to promote the growth of girls' high school flag football in Indiana.

This initiative aims to achieve full sanctioning of girls' high school flag football by the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA).

In the coming months, the Colts will collaborate with school leaders and athletic directors to raise awareness about this funding opportunity.

The effort began in 2023 with the establishment of the Colts Girls High School Flag Football League, which started with eight teams in Indianapolis and South Bend. By 2024, this league had grown to include 27 teams.

To reach the goal of becoming a fully sanctioned sport, at least 100 member schools must participate while flag football remains classified as an "emerging sport." Currently, there are already 20 participating schools in Indiana.

The estimated cost for launching a team ranges from $5,000 to $8,000, covering equipment, uniforms, and coaching stipends. To assist with these expenses, the Colts plan to invest up to $10,000 for each of the next 75 schools that commit to starting a team in 2025.

“Flag football is one of the fastest-growing sports in the world for a reason – it offers physical and mental health benefits, teaches teamwork, discipline and resilience, and is a pathway to greater opportunities for young women in sports and beyond,” said Colts Vice Chair & Owner Kalen Jackson. “The more girls play, the stronger the game will be.”
“Girls flag football is more than a sport – it’s a movement that opens doors to college scholarships, recruitment opportunities and careers in athletics,” added Colts Vice Chair & Owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon. “By starting a team, schools not only will foster a new sport but also help young women develop leadership skills and a lifelong passion for football.”

The announcement regarding this substantial investment was made during a recent Colts game against the Lions.
