Colts Pursue Daniel Jones
The Indianapolis Colts may be close to signing a veteran quarterback to compete with current starter Anthony Richardson. According to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, the Colts are one of two leading contenders to sign former New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones. The other contender is reportedly the Minnesota Vikings, who signed Jones as a backup for Sam Darnold after he was released by the Giants in November.Colts general manager Chris Ballard stated at the NFL Combine that the team is actively pursuing veteran quarterbacks to create an open competition for the starting job. "We want to create real competition," Ballard said. "It's good for the team. I think it's good for Anthony."Jones was drafted sixth overall by the Giants in 2019 as Eli Manning's heir apparent, but has struggled with injuries and poor performance throughout his six seasons in New York. He won just 24 of 69 games during that time span. One highlight of Jones' career came in the 2022 season when he led the Giants to victory against the Vikings in the NFC Wild Card round. The win secured a four-year, $160 million deal for Jones. However, after a season and a half of injuries and poor performance, the Giants released him in November 2024. Less than a week later, the Vikings signed Jones as a backup.According to Russini, the decision will likely be on Jones' shoulders whether he wants to play for the Colts or stay with the Vikings.
