Lasting Bonds: IMS Yellow Shirts' Enduring Friendship Fueled by Love of Racing
SPEEDWAY — Anyone who's been to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway knows the color yellow. But when it comes to the IMS Yellow Shirts, their love of racing runs much deeper than just a caution flag.
Cassandra Coleman told WRTV, "Everything else in my life is chaos but the IMS."
For Sheila Anderson and Cassandra Coleman, among many others, working as yellow shirts, also known as the IMS safety patrol, has become an integral part of their lives. Anderson has been a part of the team for 14 years.
"I went to my first race when I was 3 days old with my mom and dad. My dad used to drive midget and stocks," Anderson said.
Their job is to ensure people get around the track safely, but it's the community and family atmosphere that keeps them coming back year after year. "Most of these people have been here since they were young. They've started off by going to the race with their families, and it's now grown to be a part of their lives," Coleman added.
"A lot of the elderly people that come to work, they said that they don’t need the money, they just come to work. Because I love it," Anderson concluded.
