McLaughlin Crashes During Fast 12 Practice
Scott McLaughlin crashed in Turn 2 during Indianapolis 500 Fast 12 practice on Sunday, going airborne after hitting the wall. The Australian driver had been trying to finish a run when he lost control of his car.
“That was the end where it was a little loose, for sure,” McLaughlin said. “Just ran a little light on downforce and I tried to finish the run. It was coming to the end, and I was trying to make sure I got around. Yeah, should’ve bailed, and unfortunately I didn’t, and I’m really sorry to my team. Kills me. But, it’s a character building day, I guess you could say.”
McLaughlin had been off to a strong start in the practice session, having secured the second-fastest speed during qualifying on Saturday.
“That thing was a rocket ship, and I destroyed it,” McLaughlin said. “I’m sad. I’m sad for the crew. I’m sad for my sponsors. Ultimately, we’ll be back out there and giving it our all again.”
The crash caused some minor damage to the track, but McLaughlin was able to exit his car and walk away without injury.
“I feel fine,” McLaughlin said. “I’m more sad that I saw my wife crying in there and nervous about me, and that brings it all to real life. I wanted to get out of the car straight away just so that she knew I was okay.”
The incident highlighted the dangers of racing at high speeds, but McLaughlin remained optimistic about his team's prospects.
