"Renowned Coach Bud Wright Steps Down from Sheridan Following Administration's Ultimatum"

SHERIDAN, Ind. — After an illustrious 60-year career in Indiana high school football, during which he secured nine state titles, Hall of Fame coach Larry “Bud” Wright has stepped down from his position as head coach at Sheridan High School.

Wright's resignation came after he was presented with an ultimatum from the school's administration, which includes superintendent David Mundy, principal Rick Davis, and athletic director Beth DeVinney. They gave him the choice to either resign or face termination. After careful consideration, Wright chose to resign.

“I knew there was no way I could work under the present administration,” Wright stated. “It’s a shame it had to end this way.”

The tension has been mounting since early in the season when Wright was suspended. He explained that the administration had failed to substantiate the allegations against him, leading them to issue the ultimatum instead.

The school administration claimed that "several" families had voiced concerns about Wright's coaching methods, thus compelling their decision. However, when pressed for details regarding these claims, he received no further information.

Remarkably, Wright dedicated 59 of his 60 years as head coach of the Blackhawks. Under his leadership, the team achieved nine state championships over three decades along with ten semi-state titles, fifteen regional championships, and twenty-two sectional championships.

This past season concluded with a record of 7-6 for the Blackhawks, finishing their journey with a significant loss of 60-19 against South Putnam in the regionals—marking their third consecutive year reaching this stage.

In a related development, Wright’s son Kevin recently accepted the head football coach position at Carmel High School after serving as one of Sheridan's associate head coaches this season. When asked if he plans to join his son's staff at Carmel, Wright remarked simply: “You’ll have to ask him.”

Regardless of where he lands next season, Wright remains optimistic about continuing his involvement in football “at some level doing something.”
