Tony Dungy Speaks Candidly About 2025 Hall of Fame Selection Process

Former Colts head coach Tony Dungy expressed surprise, disappointment, and frustration after Adam Vinatieri and Reggie Wayne were not selected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame when the Class of 2025 was announced. As one of the voters, Dungy felt that both players should have been elected.

“I’m one of the voters, and we sat there and voted, we had an all-day Zoom meeting and we’re trying to break things down,” Dungy said. “We’re splitting hairs between 10 and 12 really, really gifted candidates, and we only elected three modern-day people into the Hall. We were discussing eight, nine guys that should have gone in. So, to have Adam Vinatieri and Reggie Wayne sitting there and not get in, and we only elected three, to me it doesn’t make sense.”

The selection process saw only three Modern-Era Players elected: Eric Allen, Jared Allen, and Antonio Gates. With up to five Modern-Day Players eligible for election each year, Dungy was dismayed that Vinatieri and Wayne were not among them.

Vinatieri played 14 seasons with the Colts, winning four Super Bowls, including three with the Patriots. He holds numerous NFL records, including most field goals made (599) and points scored (2,673). Wayne played 14 seasons with the Colts, accumulating 14,345 yards and 82 touchdowns.

Wayne is still employed by the Colts as their wide receivers coach.
