Carmel Basement Houses Impressive 3,000-Piece M&M Collection

CARMEL — Step into Rick Stephan's 2,300 square foot basement in Carmel and be prepared to be amazed.

This unique space is brimming with an astonishing array of M&M trinkets and collectibles. Originally designed as a living area for his mother-in-law, complete with a full kitchen and furnished spaces, it has transformed into what Stephan affectionately calls his "junior M&M world." What began 30 years ago with a simple gift—a basketball-shaped M&M figurine from his three daughters—has blossomed into an impressive collection.

"I think I have around 3,000," he said.

Due to a family rule established by his wife that no M&Ms are allowed upstairs, the basement has become home to all his cherished collectibles. Within these walls, you'll find just about anything imaginable that features the iconic candy brand.

"I am a collector at heart," he said.

The extensive collection includes pillows, cookie jars, phones, salt and pepper shakers—an endless list of items that reflects Stephan's passion. He boasts:

"Lip balm, watches, radios, a Christmas tree, an entire kitchen stocked with M&M items: cups, plates, bowls, cookie jars, serving platters, magnets, ice cream scoops."

A standout piece in this vibrant collection is a custom M&M-themed model train displayed on a rolling platform over his pool table. This delightful project not only engages him but also brings joy when created alongside his grandkids. The train setup features:

"A town equipped with billboards, homes, and yellow M&Ms being abducted by a UFO."

He even incorporated smoke stacks made from mini M&M bottles and painted basketball courts within the town scene. The neighborhoods are constructed using Department 56-painted porcelain buildings that many collectors admire.

Among Stephan's prized possessions is an entire scene from "Pirates of the Caribbean" showcased in glass cases; each collectible holds its own value and rarity. One notable item is his perpetual calendar comprising all twelve pieces representing each month.

His collection even spans international borders with pieces sourced from China, London, and Australia. As he puts it:

"There's just fun. When you come down here or go someplace where there are M&Ms you just feel good. So if I am feeling not so good I like to come down here; most of these guys are smiling and you can't help but feel a little happier."

This whimsical environment allows him to reconnect with childhood joy—even finding happiness in something as simple as an M&M featuring his daughters' faces.

But Stephan's collecting journey isn't over yet; he remains on the lookout for missing pieces to enhance his collection:

"Every time I think I have them all then I find that there is one or two that I don't have. I have one coming in the mail and there is one I can't find that's a cowboy."

The top item on Rick’s wish list? A cowboy salt and pepper shaker!

Ultimately, the joy these colorful candies bring to Stephan’s life—and those fortunate enough to visit—is well worth the investment. His dedication extends even to naming the family cat Bruno—a playful nod to both music artist Bruno Mars and the company behind M&Ms.
