Wishstory: A Journey from the Riddick Building to Meridian Street
WISH-TV's journey began in 1941 as WISH Radio, before moving to the Riddick Building on Meridian Street in 1950. By 1964, the television station had outgrown its original location and relocated just five blocks north, seamlessly continuing programming without missing a beat.
"I started work here in the summer of 1956 after coming back from college," said Jocelyn McCoy, a former secretary at WISH-TV. "It was exciting to watch things grow and change."
Jocelyn joined WISH-TV just two years after its television broadcast began. At the time, the station shared space with the American Fletcher National Bank and Riddick Piano Co. in the Riddick Building.
The site is now occupied by the American Red Cross Regional Headquarters. McCoy recalled her early days at the station, working as a secretary in the sales department.
"Back then they didn't call us administrative assistants; we were secretaries," she said. "Everything was much smaller then. We probably had a tenth of the employees that WISH-TV has now."
The new building was dedicated on August 1, 1965, with Mayor John J. Barton participating in the ceremony.
Over the decades, the newsroom has shifted locations within the building. McCoy, who moved on by the time of the new building's dedication, recently toured the facility, remarking on the many memories it brought back.
Jocelyn shared a heartfelt tale about her sister having complications while giving birth at Coleman Hospital (now part of IUPUI). The WISH-TV news director at the time went above and beyond to help Jocelyn's family, creating a lasting impact.
