Braun's Budget Proposal Ends Funding for Martin University
Governor Mike Braun's state budget proposal has sparked outrage as it eliminates funding for Martin University, a private institution in Indianapolis and Indiana's only predominantly Black university.
"These are just racist moves by this administration, so it's not fair," said State Rep. Gregory W. Porter, a Democrat from Indianapolis. "We are part of this society and we should not continue to have the rug pulled from under us."
Porter noted that Braun's budget is a complete cut from the 2023-2024 budget, with no funding allocated for the College Success Program, which aims to encourage minority and first-generation, low-income students to attend college.
This means a total of $10 million in support for minority students has been eliminated, according to Porter. "Not to fund it at this level would be disastrous, I believe from my perspective for the university and for the students."
Martin University had previously received a $2.5 million grant from the legislature in the last budget cycle.
Porter urged the community to speak up against the proposal. "You need to come down to the Statehouse, let it be known, have some meetings with the governor's people, be in committees when these bills are heard and express yourself."
Martin University issued a statement:
"Martin University has monitored and is aware of developments related to the state budget. In the meantime, Martin University remains focused on its mission to serve our students and community."
