Education Department Shutdown Efforts "Moving in a Very Good Direction

Following a cabinet meeting, Education Secretary Linda McMahon discussed efforts to dismantle the Department of Education. President Donald Trump has tasked her with achieving this goal. While there is no set timeline, McMahon emphasized that any such shutdown will require buy-in from Congress.

McMahon stated that she has been working with governors and superintendents across the country to identify best practices for helping them implement new tools and handle the Department of Education's work effectively. She expressed optimism about the process, saying, "It's all moving in a very good direction."

"The president has said from day one that dismantling the Department of Education will not mean defunding those programs," she said. "That money is appropriated by Congress. It will continue to be appropriated by Congress and the budget that we are looking at for both Title I IDEA funding is certainly not being decreased and so parents, teachers and kids should not be worried about that."
