Caitlin Clark Stalking Suspect Arrested
A Texas man, Michael Lewis, 55, has been arrested and charged with felony stalking after sending numerous threats and sexually charged messages to Caitlin Clark, the guard of All-Star Fever.
The graphic messages were sent through X starting in mid-December and continued through January. Some texts described stalking Clark's home and Gainbridge Fieldhouse, while others contained sexually explicit content.
Prosecutors used Lewis' IP address to pinpoint his location at a downtown Indianapolis hotel, which was "especially concerning given that he is a Texas resident." Despite an earlier police visit in which Lewis claimed the messages were just jokes and fantasies, the messages continued until his arrest.
Clark spoke with detectives about her fear and changing her public routines for safety. She confirmed she had never met Lewis and never responded to his texts.
Lewis has been charged with stalking and a "stay away" order was issued against him, prohibiting him from entering Gainbridge and Hinkle fieldhouses and other unspecified locations in Indianapolis.
No matter how prominent a figure you are, this case shows that online harassment can quickly escalate to actual threats of physical violence.
It takes a lot of courage for women to come forward in these cases, which is why many don’t. In doing so, the victim is setting an example for all women who deserve to live and work in Indy without the threat of sexual violence.
We commend Pacers Sports & Entertainment, and the Marion County Sherriff’s Office for the swift and serious action that led to this weekend’s arrest.
If convicted, Lewis faces up to six years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
