Cancer-Linked Contaminant Found in Popular Protein Powders
A new report from the Clean Label Project reveals "disturbing" levels of lead and cadmium in popular protein powders, with some products exceeding federal or state safety regulations. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, there is no safe level of lead for human consumption, and cadmium is a known carcinogen.
The heavy metals are linked to complications affecting various systems, including the heart, kidneys, gut, brain, respiratory, and reproductive systems.
Testing 160 products from 70 top-selling brands, representing 83% of the market, revealed that nearly half of those products exceeded safety thresholds for toxic metals. Specifically, 47% exceeded California Proposition 65 safety thresholds.
The Clean Label Project suggests two possible sources of contamination: contaminated soils where ingredients are grown and packaging used for these products.
