Indianapolis Weather: Stormy End to Warm Week, Cooler Temperatures Arrive for Weekend

The warmest temperatures of the week arrive today, but a stormy end is on the horizon. Widespread showers and storms will slide into the region on Friday.

Thursday:

This morning will be quiet with light winds and partly cloudy skies. Temperatures will be mild, hovering around 60°F in most locations. Expect mostly sunny skies to become partly cloudy as we head into the afternoon, with a low chance of scattered showers or thunderstorms late in the day.

High temperatures will reach the low 80s this afternoon.

Thursday night:

Partly to mostly cloudy skies are expected overnight with mild temperatures. There may be a low chance of isolated showers or thunderstorms through the overnight hours, but most areas should remain dry. Lows will fall to the mid-60s.

Friday:

Mild and muggy conditions are expected on Friday with increasing clouds through the morning. Numerous showers and thunderstorms are likely by midday and into the afternoon. No severe weather is expected, but some storms could produce gusty winds and large hail. The bigger concern will be the potential for heavy downpours.

Low pressure will continue to move through the area Friday evening. Showers and thunderstorms will persist through much of the evening, gradually diminishing overnight from west to east. We should dry out just before daybreak on Saturday. Rainfall totals of 0.5 to 1 inch are expected, with locally higher amounts possible.

This weekend:

Sharply cooler temperatures are on the way for the weekend. Look for partly cloudy skies Saturday morning with early morning temperatures in the mid to upper 40s. Highs will struggle to reach the mid-60s by Saturday afternoon.

Conditions should improve slightly on Sunday with mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies. High temperatures will reach the upper 60s to low 70s.

Next week:

The workweek will start with warmer conditions and mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies. Monday looks mostly dry, with only an isolated chance of rain late in the evening. Highs will reach the upper 70s across the area.

A cold front moving through on Tuesday will bring the risk of strong to severe thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon and evening. Damaging winds, large hail, and heavy rainfall are all expected during the second half of Tuesday.

Some lingering moisture is possible heading into Wednesday, with slightly cooler temperatures. As we open the month of May next Thursday, temperatures are expected to hover just above average in the low 70s.
