Measles Outbreaks in Texas and New Mexico Reach Nearly 100 Cases
Measles outbreaks in Texas and New Mexico have reached nearly 100 confirmed cases, with 16 people hospitalized. The larger outbreak in west Texas has accounted for 90 cases across seven counties, including all 16 hospitalizations.
The majority of cases are among children: 26 cases are in kids under 4, while 51 cases are among children aged 5-17 years old. Ten adults are also infected.
“This is the largest outbreak of measles in Texas for nearly 30 years,” officials said.
In eastern New Mexico, a separate outbreak has been reported, with nine cases in Lea County. Officials do not believe the cases in their state are connected to those in Texas, despite their proximity.
Health workers in Texas are maintaining screening and vaccination efforts, as well as providing education in schools about vaccination. In New Mexico, health officials plan to hold vaccination clinics next week.
