Rescue on the White River: IFD Saves Two Girls
Firefighters with the Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD) responded to a dramatic rescue on Sunday when two juvenile girls jumped into the White River to retrieve a floatation device, only to find themselves swept away by a strong current. Fortunately, bystanders heard their cries for help and called 911.
"It was like they were out of control," said IFD Captain Michael Sanders, who led the rescue efforts. "The water is cold, it's fast-moving, and it's dark. It's not a good situation to be in."
At 3:13 p.m., two juvenile girls jumped into the White River under the bridge near the East 67th Street and North College Avenue intersection in an attempt to retrieve a floatation device. As they tried to get back on land, the current carried them further downstream.
Around 15 minutes later, IFD water and rescue dive teams, along with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department and Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services, worked together to locate the girls and bring them to safety. After being rescued, the girls were checked for injuries and released to their parents.
