Safe Zones Program Launched by INDOT to Combat Speeding in Work Zones

A new program aimed at reducing speeding in work zones has been launched by the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT). The Safe Zones program uses radar technology and cameras to monitor speeds in work zones, with real enforcement set to begin on or after May 5.

"Speed kills," said Richard Hedgecock, president of the Indiana Constructors, Inc. "Speed kills."

The program allows INDOT to place speed cameras in four work zones in Indiana and has already seen promising results. In the first four months of pre-enforcement, a reduction of 70% in speeding was observed.

"We have already seen promising results with this program as we look to reduce speeds," said Lyndsay Quist, commissioner of INDOT. "In the first four months of pre-enforcement, INDOT saw a reduction in 70% of speeding in the work zone."

The initiative uses radar technology to catch drivers going more than 11 miles per hour in a work zone. If a driver is caught speeding, they will receive a warning or fine, depending on their offense history.

"On the first speeding offense, it's a warning. On the second offense, it's a $75 fine, and all other offenses its $150. Violations will be sent to drivers in the mail,"

The goal of the program is to keep everyone safer by reducing incidents and crashes in work zones.

"In 2024, we had 30 people killed in our work zones. 1500 were injured. Now that is a huge number," said Matthew Ubelhor, the Indiana Secretary of Transportation and Infrastructure. "We have to, as a group and as a state, guard and protect the people that are in these work zones."
