Shooting Incident Near Arsenal Technical High School Involving Officer and Suspects
An off-duty officer was taken to a hospital on Monday morning after trying to recover a stolen car near Arsenal Technical High School in Indianapolis. According to online police reports, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded to a "person shot" incident around 6:30 a.m. in the 600 block of Woodruff Place Drive West.
Initially, it was believed that the man who was trying to recover the stolen car had been shot. However, a news release issued later by IMPD stated that the man's injuries were determined to not be from a gunshot and he has since been released from the hospital.
"The incident stemmed from the stolen vehicle," said IMPD Office Tommy Thompson. "The off-duty officer chased after the stolen vehicle and sustained injuries in the process." The stolen vehicle has been recovered, Thompson added.
A disturbance took place between the victim, his friend, and two suspects in the stolen car, resulting in shots being fired. Preliminary investigation suggests that both the suspect(s) and the victim may have fired shots. The suspects then crashed the stolen vehicle and fled on foot, but have not been located.
"Detectives located at least one residence nearby that had been struck by the gunfire," said IMPD's news release. "Thankfully, no uninvolved community members were injured during this incident."
Investigators believe one suspect was wearing a black hoodie with tan or gray pants, while the other was wearing either a gray or white top with black pants.
"A perimeter was set up around the area as officers, with assistance from the IMPD K9 Unit and an IMPD drone, began searching the area for the suspects," said the news release. Investigators found three firearms and the stolen vehicle.
Arsenal Tech and H.L. Harshman Middle Schools were placed on lockdown but was lifted shortly after 9 a.m. Anyone with information is asked to call IMPD Detective Larry Craciunoiu at 317-327-3475 or email him at [email protected].
