Storm Alert: Flash Flood Threat on Wednesday

Indiana is bracing for severe weather and flash flooding threats on Wednesday, with the potential for widespread significant flooding to impact central and southern parts of the state into the weekend.

"Round One" will bring showers and thunderstorms on Wednesday morning, with small hail possible, while "Round Two" could produce strong to severe storms in the late afternoon and nighttime hours, leading to flash flooding.

"The significant threat will depend on if supercells form and/or the incoming line along the cold front ingests more unstable air than expected. The threat is highlighted by the darkened shade with solid black outline."

A Moderate Risk (Level 4 of 5) of severe weather has been issued for southwestern Indiana, while the remainder of the state sits in an Enhanced Risk (Level 3 of 5). All hazards are on the table, with wind being the main threat.

We're expecting up to 1-3 inches of rain by Thursday morning, with some possible flash flooding. Wind advisories will be in place from 8 a.m. Wednesday to 1 a.m. Thursday due to strong southerly winds gusting up to 45 mph.

Rain will turn more scattered on Thursday for areas along and south of interstate 70, setting the stage for multiple waves of rain into the weekend. Highs will top out in the mid to upper 60s.

The 7-day forecast shows central and southern Indiana within an increased flood risk, with rainfall totals expected to be from 4-7 inches through Sunday morning, with the highest totals in southern Indiana. Some rivers could reach major flood stages, while spots in central Indiana may reach at least moderate flood stages.
