Tragedy on Ohio Bridge: Fatal Train Accident Claims Lives of Two Women and a Child from Fort Wayne
Two women and a 5-year-old girl from Fort Wayne, Indiana, lost their lives after a train struck them while they were on a railroad bridge over the Sandusky River in northern Ohio. Authorities confirmed the tragedy on Monday.
Crews equipped with sonar had been scouring the river through the night before they found the 5-year-old girl's body near the bridge, said Fremont Mayor Danny Sanchez.
The family was on a fishing trip along the Sandusky River when they were struck by the train. A 1-year-old girl was rescued and is in critical condition.
Investigation details are still unclear, but Sanchez emphasized that the railroad bridge is not intended for pedestrians and was marked with no trespassing signs. He also stated that he did not believe the family was fishing off the bridge when the train approached.
City officials identified the victims as Ram Masan, 50; O Ny Zar, 34; and Intisar Mi, 5; all of Fort Wayne.
The two women who died were a mother and her adult daughter, according to the mayor. Rail operator Norfolk Southern expressed deep sadness over the tragedy in a statement and is working with authorities on the investigation.
