Subway Discontinues $6.99 Meal Deal, Launches New App Promotion

Fast food chain Subway is discontinuing its $6.99, six-inch meal deal that was originally set to last through the end of the year. According to a message sent to operators and reported by Restaurant Business Magazine, the deal—which included a six-inch sub, cookies or chips, and a drink—did not achieve the expected results.

Instead of being available in-store, this meal deal will now only be offered through digital channels until December 26. Additionally, starting Wednesday, Subway is introducing a new promotion: customers can enjoy 20% off any sub when they order through the app by using the code "TWENTYOFF," valid until January 5.

This shift in promotional strategy comes as several fast-food chains have started focusing on value meals to attract customers feeling the pinch of inflation. For instance, McDonald's recently made its $5 meal deal—a combination of a sandwich, fries, chicken nuggets, and a beverage—a permanent option on its menu.

Throughout the summer, various fast food brands began offering discounted value meals in an effort to regain customers lost due to rising prices. Leaders from several chains have acknowledged that inflation has deterred some patrons and have emphasized affordability as a key focus for 2024.

In related news, Subway announced that CEO John Chidsey will retire at year’s end and pass leadership to Carrie Walsh, who currently serves as president for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
