Cafeteria Manager Inspires Students with Art
at James Whitcomb Riley School 43
Anika Evans, the school's cafeteria manager, is inspiring students to find their passion for art beyond just serving food. Her creativity is helping students discover their own love for painting and drawing.
"I've always been into art," Evans said.
Some of her artwork decorates the cafeteria walls, which now incorporates student sketches. The idea started when kids asked her to draw them as cartoon characters.
"All the kids were like, 'Can you draw me? Can you draw me?' and that's how I started doing the sketches," Evans said.
The school's new mission includes visual and performing arts programs, which aligns with Evans' passion for art. Last year, James Whitcomb Riley School 43 transitioned into a Pre-K through fifth-grade arts-focused school, offering opportunities in various fields like art, dance, theater, music, and more.
"We see students making connections and being excited to be part of the different programs that we offer," said Chrishell Sam, the school's principal.
For Evans, art is a way to inspire the next generation. She believes it brings joy and helps open students' eyes to their own potential.
"Art is soothing for me, but it brings a smile to me because they are the future," Evans said. "They're so talented. They can do this, they can do that. I'm just happy I'm able to help open eyes."
The school has already seen positive results, with the highest improvement in third-grade IREAD scores recorded last year - a 28% jump.
