Empowering Women Through Grief Transformation
She Moves Forward, a organization led by founder and CEO Jan Mitchell, is empowering women in Black and brown communities through grief wellness coaching. After losing her husband in 2017, Mitchell founded the organization to help women rebuild their lives after loss.
"I wanted to create resources that cater specifically to women who are going through this journey," said Mitchell. "It's not just about surviving, it's about thriving."
The organization provides a safe space for women to focus on future planning and holistic health, moving beyond mere survival to thriving. She Moves Forward Incorporated has developed books and resources, which have been donated to organizations such as Indy Reads and Brooks Place.
Mitchell's work also extends to legislative advocacy. The organization has developed Steven's Law, aimed at supporting families with loved ones in the hospital or hospice care. Mitchell has engaged with legislators to push this initiative forward, crediting state Rep. Robin Shackleford for her instrumental role in advancing the law.
In addition to legislative efforts, She Moves Forward has collaborated with Alzheimer's groups to extend their impact. Mitchell's work has been recognized as beneficial to many women, providing them with the tools to manage stress and grief effectively.
