Learning by Doing: Pendleton Students Get Hands-On Experience in Vocational Training

Pendleton students got hands-on experience in vocational training during Trades Day at Pendleton Heights Middle School. The event, sponsored by the Madison County Builders Association, allowed middle schoolers to try out construction and learn how to work with their hands.

Industry professionals guided the students as they performed tasks such as assembling a table or settling concrete. This was the second time Trades Day had come to Pendleton, but it's especially significant now due to changes in Indiana's education system made this year.

"They're deciding if they're taking the college pathway or the career pathway, and that is decided by February of 8th grade," said Karen Shreves of the Madison County Builders Association.

Shreves noted that they are planning to expand Trades Day to more schools next year due to the newfound relevance of trades careers in K-12 education. She believes that by allowing children the opportunity, trades become less alien to them.

The projects made by Pendleton Heights Middle School students during Trades Day will remain on display at the school.
