Rick Davies, Legendary Supertramp Lead Singer, Passes Away at 81
Rick Davies, the legendary lead singer and co-founder of British rock band Supertramp, has passed away at the age of 81. The band announced his death on Monday, stating that he died on Saturday due to blood cancer multiple myeloma.
“As co-writer, along with partner Roger Hodgson, he was the voice and pianist behind Supertramp’s most iconic songs, leaving an indelible mark on rock music history.”
Davies formed Supertramp in London in 1969, alongside Roger Hodgson. The band released several successful albums, including “Crime of the Century” and “Even in the Quietest Moments…”. However, it was their sixth studio album, “Breakfast in America”, that cemented their reputation and put them firmly on the map.
The album included hits such as “The Logical Song” and “Take the Long Way Home”. Hodgson eventually left the band after their 1983 tour, leaving Davies at the helm until 1988 when they disbanded. Supertramp reformed in 1996 without Hodgson, and performed until 2012.
“Beyond the stage, Rick was known for his warmth, resilience, and devotion to his wife Sue, with whom he shared over five decades.”
After facing serious health challenges, which prevented him from continuing to tour as Supertramp, Davies enjoyed performing with his hometown friends as Ricky and the Rockets.
