Trump Considers Stripping Rosie O'Donnell of US Citizenship
President Donald Trump has sparked outrage by considering revoking the US citizenship of comedian Rosie O'Donnell, despite a decades-old Supreme Court ruling that prohibits such an action. In a social media post, Trump claimed he was giving "serious consideration" to taking away O'Donnell's citizenship because she is not in the best interests of the country.
"Because of the fact that Rosie O'Donnell is not in the best interests of our Great Country, I am giving serious consideration to taking away her Citizenship," Trump wrote. He added that O'Donnell should stay in Ireland "if they want her."
O'Donnell has been a longtime critic of Trump and has publicly denounced him and his administration's policies. She moved to Ireland in January and is currently seeking Irish citizenship through family lineage.
Amanda Frost, a law professor at the University of Virginia School of Law, pointed out that the Supreme Court ruled in 1967 that the Fourteenth Amendment of the Constitution prevents the government from taking away citizenship. "The president has no authority to take away the citizenship of a native-born U.S. citizen," Frost said. "In short, we are nation founded on the principle that the people choose the government; the government cannot choose the people."
O'Donnell responded to Trump's threat by writing on social media that she had upset him and "add me to the list of people who oppose him at every turn." This is not the first time Trump has threatened to revoke someone's citizenship, having recently targeted his former adviser Elon Musk.
