Prairie Creek Reservoir Park Rule Changes Announced
Muncie officials, in collaboration with Indiana American Water, have announced a series of changes to the rules and operations at Prairie Creek Reservoir Park.
The changes are aimed at ensuring long-term water quality and environmental sustainability of the park, which serves as the source of drinking water for the community. According to a news release, the updates will help preserve the reservoir's health and sustainability by limiting the growth of docks and reducing potential impacts on water quality.
Muncie has expanded the use of certain areas of Prairie Creek Reservoir Park beyond the provisions outlined in the original lease agreement. However, Indiana American Water is now requiring updates, prompting Muncie officials to work with them to rectify their concerns.
"The purpose of these changes is to ensure that we can continue to provide high-quality drinking water for our community while also protecting the environment and preserving the park's natural resources," said a Muncie official.
The Muncie Parks and Recreation Board has approved the following operational changes:
- Horse and ATV trail closures (effective August 1, 2025): The west section of the lake, including Indian Hill, equestrian trails, and ATV trails, will be closed to the public.
- No horses allowed (effective August 1, 2025): Horses and horse trailers are no longer permitted in the park.
- Transfer policy changes: Transfers of campsites and dock spaces will no longer be allowed.
- Suspension of lottery system: The lottery system for the 2026 season will be suspended until further notice.
The changes aim to proactively manage growth, protect this vital water resource, and preserve it for current and future users.
