Renovated Indiana Roof Ballroom Shines Brightly

The historic Indiana Roof Ballroom has unveiled its new renovation ahead of its 100th anniversary in 2027. Lovingly referred to as "Roof," the downtown Indianapolis venue at 140 W. Washington St. has hosted famous celebrities and musicians.

Jeff Van Der Moere, General Manager at Crystal Signature Events, described the renovation, saying: “Those are 9-foot-long on the outside and 12-foot-long beaded curtains on the inside. What makes it pop is they’re mirrored crystals.”

The event company manages the Indiana Roof Ballroom, which originally opened in 1927 as a European-inspired village. The design has been preserved, including the dance floor and its wood.

Jack Bayt, a partner at Crystal Signature Events, said: “The floor, the boards were hand-soaked, and they turned them to make concentric circles. The floors are actually on hydraulic jacks, so they move. When they used to do the bunny hop and dance, the floor gives.”

The renovation has been a work of love, with Bayt stating: “We spent $3.5 million over two years for the transformation. We’ve been good stewards to keep it where it belongs because it’s a huge part of history. So many people have met here, from weddings to galas.”

Famous individuals like Tony Curtis, Julia Roberts, and Peyton Manning have graced the floor. The Indianapolis Urban League and other local groups have already booked events at the newly renovated Roof.

Kim Teague of the Indianapolis Urban League said: “When we came in tonight and saw all the new renovations like curtains, a chandelier, and the beautiful bar over here, it makes me so excited to see what’s going to be for our event.”
