Avon School Support Staff Member Fired After Handgun Found on Campus
A handgun was found on Tuesday in a handbag at Hickory Elementary School in Avon, leading to the termination of a support staff member.
An employee discovered the handbag in a secure staff closet and opened it to identify the owner, only to find a handgun inside.
“Our highest priority in Avon Schools is to ensure our schools remain safe learning environments for our students and staff.”— Kevin Carr, communications coordinator for Avon Community School Corp.
The Avon School Police Department was called to secure the handgun, and determined that it belonged to a support staff member who had accidentally left it in the handbag.
No arrest was announced, but the matter was “turned over to law enforcement.”
Avon Schools emphasized the importance of safety and encouraged students and staff to report any concerns immediately.
Carr expressed gratitude that the information about the handgun was reported promptly.
