Flash Drought Concerns Rise in Indiana Amid Dry Weather
A flash drought is characterized by the rapid onset or intensification of dry conditions, and Indiana is now facing just that. With dry weather persisting across the state, the U.S. Climate Prediction Center has added a significant portion of Indiana to its "rapid onset drought risk" zone.
"A flash drought is defined as the rapid onset or intensification of drought."
This forecast runs from September 16-22, with parts of southern Indiana already experiencing an ongoing drought. The prediction should come as no surprise to Hoosiers, given the state's dry conditions since early August.
Most locations in central Indiana have received less than two inches of rainfall over the past 30 days, leading to heightened concerns about a flash drought.
A glimmer of hope lies ahead, however: there is a small chance of rain in the weekend forecast.
