Indiana Farms Placed Under Quarantine Due to Bird Flu Outbreak

Indiana animal health officials have added three more farms to the list of those quarantined after avian influenza was detected. This brings the total number of birds at risk in Indiana to over 41,100.

So far this year, at least 18 farms have dealt with bird flu, according to the latest announcements and an online dashboard.

"We are working closely with farmers to contain the outbreak and prevent further spread," said a spokesperson for the Indiana Board of Animal Health.

Farms added Friday

A commercial farm in Jay County with 16,506 turkeys was quarantined. Nearby farms in Adams and Jay counties are under surveillance.

A commercial breeder in Elkhart County with 1,800 ducks was quarantined. Nearby farms in Elkhart, LaGrange, and St. Joseph counties are under surveillance.

A "hobby flock" in Union County with 30 birds was quarantined.

Farms added Thursday

A farm in Jay County with 18,850 turkeys was quarantined. Nearby farms in Adams and Jay counties are under surveillance.

A commercial duck breeder with 3,846 birds in LaGrange County was quarantined. Nearby farms in Elkhart, LaGrange, Noble, and St. Joseph counties are under surveillance.

A "mixed-species hobby flock" with 90 birds in Jasper County was quarantined.

'Depopulated'

So far in February, three farms have been "depopulated," affecting a total of 15,529 birds. This includes 14,075 turkeys in Washington County and two commercial egg layer farms in Jay County with a combined total of 1,454,605 birds.

The Indiana Board of Animal Health also reports that two farms that had bird flu in early 2024 are being allowed to restock.
