Indianapolis Carjacking Suspect Dies Following Officer-Involved Shooting

A 19-year-old carjacking suspect who was shot by a wounded officer in late July has died of his injuries, Indianapolis police announced. Tyson Reach died Friday at Eskenazi Health, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said.

Reach was accused of shooting IMPD Officer Alejandro Renteria three times at an apartment complex off of Lafayette Road and West 16th Street on July 29. According to police, Reach was one of four men involved in a carjacking that afternoon in the area of 16th and Harding streets.

Officer Renteria spotted the stolen vehicle driving nearby and tracked it to the apartment complex. Four suspects, all males, were inside the vehicle. One passenger immediately fled. As Renteria tried to arrest the driver, two passengers got out of the car. One of them, later identified as Tyson Reach, walked around the car and started shooting.

Officer Renteria returned fire, hitting Reach at least once. Reach was taken to Eskenazi Health in critical condition. Two carjacking suspects were detained at the apartment complex, and the third was arrested a short time later.

Renteria, a four-year veteran of IMPD, spent several days in the hospital before being released. The department invited the public to send cards to the officer as he continues his recovery.
