Monitoring the Season's Initial Snowfall Accumulation
INDIANAPOLIS — As we approach a chilly Thursday, prepare for strong winds and the first significant snowfall of the season.
Wednesday Night: Expect cloud cover to move back into the area with scattered showers primarily north of I-70 until early Thursday morning. Snow is likely to mix in as we head into the overnight hours, and temperatures will drop to the upper 20s to low 30s. These low temperatures are crucial for determining Thursday’s snow accumulation potential.
Thursday: A busy winter-like day is on the horizon with two main waves of snow expected:
Wave #1: This wave will primarily affect us in the morning, bringing scattered to widespread light snow. By mid-morning, snow activity will become more sporadic, potentially leaving a light dusting on grassy and elevated surfaces.
Wave #2: The second wave is where we anticipate more significant snow accumulation. Steady snowfall with possible heavier rates will arrive by early afternoon, progressing southward through the evening and nighttime hours.
Snowfall Potential: For now, areas near and north of Interstate 74 could receive one to two inches of snow, with locally higher amounts possible. Most accumulation will likely be seen on grassy and elevated surfaces during both waves. Slushy roads may complicate travel, particularly during Wave #2.
Uncertainties: Despite being less than 24 hours from this event, several key factors still need monitoring. First, ground temperatures have remained relatively warm due to recent mild weather; this will significantly impact snow accumulation and road conditions. Second, rain may mix in with some of the second wave of snow. Lastly, the track of this second wave could influence where higher snowfall totals are recorded.
The day ahead promises cold and windy conditions. Wind gusts between 30-40 MPH will create wind chill values in the 20s, while high temperatures struggle to reach the low to mid-30s.
Friday: Showers may linger into Friday as breezy conditions continue with wind gusts up to 25-30 MPH. High temperatures are expected to rise slightly into the low to mid-40s.
7-Day Forecast: Temperatures are set to rebound this weekend, reaching back into the 50s by Sunday. We'll see upper 50s on Monday before another round of active weather brings additional rain chances early next week followed by another cooldown.
