Suspect Arrested in West Side Police Shooting

A 19-year-old suspect, Tyson Reach, has been arrested in connection with a west side police shooting that left an Indianapolis police officer injured.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, Reach is preliminarily charged with attempted murder and has been in custody at a hospital since Tuesday. He remains in critical condition.

The shooting occurred on Tuesday after a carjacking near 16th and Harding streets. The officer recognized the stolen vehicle and followed it into an apartment building off of 16th Street and Lafayette Road, where four male suspects were inside.

While trying to arrest one of the suspects, 19-year-old Mahki Starks, the officer was shot at least three times before returning fire and hitting Reach at least once. Both men were taken to a hospital for treatment.

The injured officer was released on Wednesday.

"It was a very intense situation," said IMPD Deputy Chief Chris Bailey. "Our officer did what he had to do to protect himself and others."
