Colts QB Competition: A Coach's Perspective
The Indianapolis Colts have been wrapping up their training camp at Grand Park, with the quarterback competition between Anthony Richardson Sr. and Daniel Jones being the main focus.
Offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter has shared his thoughts on the competition, stating that it's brought out the best in both quarterbacks as they push to improve.
“These guys are both good players that have played good football in this league and we expect them to come out and compete really, really hard,” Cooter said. “We expected the competition to bring out the best in both of them. That’s what we are seeing. It hasn’t been perfect, we’ve had our plusses and our minuses, but the guys each run a different group in a different period of the day and shoot they are competing to score as many points as they can with that group. Or move the ball as much as they can or whatever the success is in that drill. I think it is raising the level of each of them. It’s good to see. It’s good for our offense. The better they’re playing, the better the guys around them are playing and they are feeding off each other and that has been really good to see.”
Jones will start for the Colts in their second preseason game against the Packers on Saturday, with Richardson set to play the rest of the first half.
In their first preseason game against the Ravens, Jones threw for 144 yards on 10/21 passing, while Richardson was 2/3 for 21 yards before leaving due to a dislocated right pinky.
The Colts will have a joint practice against the Packers on Thursday at Grand Park, with kickoff in the preseason game scheduled for 1 p.m. at Lucas Oil Stadium on Saturday.
