Colts Running Back Suffers Severe Leg Injury, Leaves Practice on Stretcher

The Indianapolis Colts' training camp took an abrupt turn when running back Salvon Ahmed suffered a severe leg injury during a practice session. Ahmed was tackled by rookie safety Trey Washington in the end zone, leading to a lengthy stoppage in play.

Ahmed lay on the ground for several minutes as trainers attended to him before lifting him onto a stretcher and removing him from the field. Quarterback Anthony Richardson and defensive lineman DeForest Buckner were among those consoling Ahmed after the injury.

Ahmed left the practice session with his face covered by a towel, prompting an immediate response from head coach Shane Steichen in his post-practice media availability.

“Never want to see that happen. I know we don’t encourage hip-drop tackles. I know Trey (Washington) is down in the dumps. I don’t think he’s trying to do that,” Steichen said. “We’re just trying to create an edge – is what I’m trying to get done, especially in the developmental. Those guys are going to have to tackle come preseason. But thoughts and prayers with Salvon, and hopefully he has a speedy recovery.”

This marks the second consecutive year that a Colts offensive playmaker has suffered an injury during training camp. Last summer, wide receiver Josh Downs sustained an ankle injury after being tackled by safety Nick Cross early in camp. Downs missed the first two weeks of the regular season as he recovered.

The team travels to Baltimore on Monday and will join the Ravens for a joint practice on Tuesday before facing off in their first preseason game Thursday at 7 p.m. Eastern.
