LIV Golf Indianapolis Makes History in First Round

LIV Golf Indianapolis made history in its first round, with Torque GC's Sebastián Muñoz stealing the show. He set a LIV Golf record by birding eight straight holes and finished with a 13-birdie streak out of his last 14 holes.

Muñoz shot a remarkable 59, making him just the third player to shoot a sub-60 round in LIV Golf. He credited mental strength for his incredible performance, which came after recording a double bogey early on.

"It was a lot of mental strength out there," Muñoz said. "I felt like — I started decent. A couple pars, a birdie and then a couple bad shots in a row, ended up making double. Kind of forgave myself, honestly. I didn’t want to hold on and have a grudge all day, so I kind of forgave myself."

Muñoz's record-breaking hot streak gave him a three-shot lead heading into Saturday, with Dustin Johnson in second place at -9. There's a four-way tie for third at -7: Cameron Smith, Patrick Reed, Thomas Pieters, and Joaquín Niemann.

This weekend marked the first time LIV Golf has played a tournament in Indiana, and the event drew a large crowd of enthusiastic fans. Muñoz was impressed by the turnout and hopes to keep playing well for the remainder of the tournament.

"It’s been great," Muñoz said. "It was great to see a lot of fans out there today. It’s great for the city of Indianapolis to show up when we come. I felt like they enjoyed it. There’s a lot of birdies out there. It’s a little easier track than what we usually play, but you’ve still got to make the putts, you’ve still got to hit the shots. It was a good show for the city of Indianapolis today, and hope that I can keep playing good and having a lot cooler moments in the next couple days."

The shotgun start for the second round is at 11:05 a.m. on Saturday.
