Tony Dungy Shares Moving Story About Jim Irsay

Tony Dungy, the former Indianapolis Colts head coach, has shared a moving story about Jim Irsay, the team's late owner. As the Colts will induct Irsay into their Ring of Honor, Dungy reflected on the impact Irsay had on his life and career.

"Jim was all about family," Dungy said. "He did so many things to bring everyone together and take care of the players, coaches, staff, and families."

Dungy shared a personal anecdote that highlighted Irsay's character. He told WISH 19-year-old son, who is a sophomore at Butler University, was born during the Super Bowl year when Dungy won with the Colts in 2006. His son had told him, "Dad, you have to get me a ticket. I have to be there because if Mr. Irsay hadn't had faith in you, I wouldn't be part of this Dungy family."

"That's Jim Irsay to me in a nutshell," Dungy said.

Irsay had called Dungy before he was hired in 2002, expressing his vision for the team and wanting to build a sense of family among its members. "All the values that were important to me, that's what Jim was talking about," Dungy recalled. "He finished the conversation by saying, 'Don't have your agent call me. Just think about it. Tell me how much money you want. You're my guy.'"

"That tells you something there, and he lived up to that," Dungy added.

Irsay passed away in May at the age of 65. He had become the sole owner of the Colts in 1997.
