Beat the Heat with Sweet Treats in Indiana
Temperatures in Central Indiana have reached the 90s this week, prompting locals to seek relief from the heat at dessert shops. According to reports, local sweet treats establishments are seeing an influx of customers seeking a cool respite.
Gordon's Milkshake Bar on Mass Ave, next to Bottleworks, is one such spot that offers a unique treat - a drink with both ice cream and cake. The shop is conveniently located near a hotel, drawing in visitors from afar.
"Being that there's a hotel right across from us, we got people coming and going every single day, that's not from here, not from Indy at all," says Aunya Gray.
The summer season brings Gordon's busiest time of year, with this week's excessive heat only adding to the demand for sweet treats. "We've had somebody in here ever since I got in here. I feel like we got good business today," Gray adds.
Just down the road, Howdy Homemade Ice Cream is also experiencing a surge in popularity. General manager Sataria Carter reports being nonstop busy this week, with her 12-hour days dedicated to making ice cream.
"It's great for business. I'm doing 12 hour days just nonstop making ice cream," Carter says.
Carter is the mastermind behind all 24 flavors on Howdy's menu, which includes unique options like ube, cold brew & cookies, and mango pineapple. However, what sets Howdy apart is its mission to employ individuals with intellectual or physical disabilities.
"It's something very dear to me. Being able to give those people the opportunity, instead of being a grocery bagger, does mean the world and gives hope and change," Carter says.
