Beloved Broad Ripple Bakery Set to Reopen Under New Ownership by Two Friends
BROAD RIPPLE — Over the past decade, the Broad Ripple area has seen significant changes, including the closure of many beloved businesses. In response, a few dedicated customers are stepping up to ensure that small businesses continue to thrive.
Isaac Roman and Thomas Hays, two friends and chefs from central Indiana, have joined forces to take over Rene’s Bakery, a cherished establishment in Broad Ripple known for its delightful pastries.
A couple of months ago, when the previous owner fell ill and faced the heartbreaking decision to close the bakery for good, Roman and Hays stepped in with determination.
“He kept getting swept away to the hospital. We kind of knew that he was thinking of selling and I told him right away, ‘Whatever it is, I'll make it happen,’” Roman said.
“We felt like we had to do everything we could to keep it around and continue Albert's legacy,” Hays added.
Having purchased the bakery, Hays and Roman are excited to announce its reopening on Friday with minimal changes to its original menu.
“You'd be able to get the same croissant you had 20 years ago,” Hays said.
In addition to preserving classic offerings, they also plan to introduce new items in the future.
“If we're not here, we're researching. Always thinking about the business,” they said.
Hays expressed his enthusiasm not only for keeping the bakery alive but also for realizing his dream of running his own business while maintaining a piece of Broad Ripple's identity.
“We want to keep with the times in Broad Ripple but at the same time, we need some of the places that people like me remember,” Hays explained.
“We have to keep some of the things that made Broad Ripple — Broad Ripple.”
